Abbottabad: The Agriculture Departments of Abbottabad and Mardan, in collaboration with Model Farm Services, organized the inaugural Family Gur (Jaggery) Festival at the Agriculture Department office in Abbottabad on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Abbottabad, Sanaullah Khan, inaugurated the event, which saw a large turnout of local farmers, citizens, and women.
Tehsil Chairman of Lower Tanawal, Junaid Khan Tanoli, Model Farm Services President, Rashid Khan, District Agriculture Officers from Mardan, Amjad Khan and Malik Ijaz from Abbottabad, Field Officer Masood Tanoli, and retired agricultural officials also participated in the festival.
The event aimed to promote local farmers and highlight pure, chemical-free Gur products. A total of over 1,200 kg of Gur was sold, with additional stalls displaying olive oil and seeds for maize and wheat.
Director of the Sugar Crops Research Institute, Mardan, Syed Asghar Ali, addressed the gathering, noting that sugarcane is grown on 92,000 hectares in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with yields varying from 560 to 1,000 maunds per hectare using modern farming techniques. He explained that many farmers are increasingly opting for jaggery production due to low sugarcane procurement rates.
Participants expressed their support for the initiative and pledged to organize similar events in the future to promote Hazara’s agricultural products throughout the province.
