Senator Rehman Urges Immediate CCI Meeting on Water Crisis
News Desk
Islamabad: Senator Sherry Rehman, PPP’s Parliamentary Leader in the Senate, on Tuesday urged the government to convene an immediate Council of Common Interest (CCI) session to clarify its stance on commercial farming in desert areas and the construction of canals on the Indus River. She stressed the importance of water conservation and finding a peaceful resolution to the issues at hand.
Speaking during an adjournment motion in the Senate, Rehman pointed out that the CCI had not met in the past 11 months and called for urgent action to tackle water distribution challenges. She warned that the government’s proposed plans could severely disrupt the equitable distribution of water in Sindh, exacerbating water scarcity and causing further environmental damage.
Rehman highlighted that Sindh, which heavily relies on the Indus water system, is already grappling with significant water diversion, deepening the region’s water crisis. She called on the government to address the imbalance in water distribution to avoid unrest among agricultural communities.
Shibli Faraz, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, expressed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s support for the rights of lower riparian areas. He too emphasized the need for an urgent CCI meeting to address the growing water scarcity issues facing the country.
