Islamabad: A plastic surgeon in Taiwan has ignited a social media frenzy after posting a video of himself performing a vasectomy on his own body.

Dr Chen Wei-nong, a father of three and a seasoned professional at a Taipei plastic surgery clinic, shared the extraordinary clip this week, drawing admiration and concern from millions of viewers.

The unconventional decision was sparked by a conversation with his wife, who had expressed reservations about the procedure. To ease her worries, Dr Chen opted to carry out the surgery himself, documenting the entire process as an educational demonstration.

In the video, Dr Chen detailed the steps of the operation. After administering local anesthesia, he carefully conducted the vasectomy, a process that typically lasts around 15 minutes. However, due to the complexity of operating on himself, the procedure extended to over an hour but concluded successfully.

“It felt surreal to touch and suture my own urethra,” Dr Chen admitted in his post. He compared the simplicity of male vasectomy to the complexity of female fallopian tube surgeries, emphasizing the former’s relative ease.

The video, which has amassed over 4 million views, received mixed reactions. Many applauded Dr Chen’s bravery and dedication to his wife, hailing him as “Taiwan’s bravest man.” However, others raised concerns about the safety and ethics of self-performed surgery.

Dr Chen addressed these criticisms by reassuring his audience that he is a licensed surgeon and conducted the operation under the supervision of a urologist, outside regular working hours. He also strongly discouraged others from attempting similar procedures, urging them to rely on qualified medical professionals instead.

Following the incident, Dr Chen shared his recovery experience, noting pain and discomfort the first night but reporting a swift recovery by the next morning.

The Taipei Department of Health reviewed the matter and confirmed that Dr. Chen had not violated any legal regulations, as he performed the surgery on himself as a licensed physician.

Despite the debate, the incident has cemented Dr Chen’s place in social media discussions as a bold figure in the medical field, albeit one whose actions have raised questions about the limits of self-surgery.
