Islamabad: Fans of the beloved Shrek franchise will have to wait a little longer for the highly anticipated fifth installment, as Universal Pictures has officially postponed its release to December 23, 2026.

Originally scheduled for July 1, 2026, the delay pushes the sequel’s premiere back by nearly six months.

While the production team has not revealed the reason behind the shift, the new release date aligns with the lucrative holiday season. Directed by Walt Dohrn, who contributed as a writer and artist for Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, the upcoming film aims to recapture the franchise’s magic.

Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are returning to voice their iconic roles as Donkey and Princess Fiona, fueling even more excitement among fans.

The Shrek franchise, based on William Steig’s children’s book, has been a cultural phenomenon since the release of its first film in 2001. The fifth movie will follow a 16-year gap since Shrek Forever After (2010), which was believed to be the final chapter.

Eddie Murphy recently confirmed the film’s progress in an interview with Collider. “We started doing Shrek four or five months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be finishing it up this year,” said the 63-year-old comedian.

As the delay leaves fans eagerly awaiting the continuation of Shrek, Fiona, and their beloved companions’ story, audiences will have to be patient until December 2026 to once again visit the enchanting world of Far Far Away.
