Islamabad: The 18th Speakers’ Conference, hosted by Pakistan’s National Assembly after a decade, concluded on Friday with political leaders pledging to strengthen democratic governance and legislative collaboration.
The two-day event brought together key parliamentary figures to address constitutional and legislative priorities. Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani underscored the significance of the forum in fostering dialogue and institutional cooperation.
“This conference demonstrates our shared commitment to enhancing the effectiveness, transparency, and inclusivity of Pakistan’s legislatures,” he said.
A central focus of discussions was the 18th Amendment, a pivotal constitutional reform that devolved powers to provinces. Delegates emphasized refining its implementation to ensure participatory governance and provincial empowerment.
Other critical topics included expanding the role of the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services, strengthening Public Accounts Committees, fostering international partnerships, and creating an Association of Secretaries to improve legislative operations.
In his closing remarks, Chairman Gilani called for unity and modernization of legislative practices. “Addressing challenges like constitutional ambiguities and ensuring inclusivity in decision-making requires collective action and cooperation,” he stated.
The conference concluded with the adoption of the Islamabad Declaration, a strategic roadmap to enhance parliamentary governance, promote regional collaboration, and advance Pakistan’s global interests.
Participants hailed the event as a significant step toward a more inclusive, transparent, and capable parliamentary system, with hopes for meaningful reforms to follow.
