Punjab Launches 102 Electric Buses in Rawalpindi
News Desk
Rawalpindi: In a major step towards reducing environmental pollution and improving public transport, the Punjab government is set to launch 102 electric buses in Rawalpindi.
The initiative, which will cover 10 public transport routes spanning 84 kilometers, is expected to cost Rs 7 billion, with the government already allocating Rs 4.7 billion for the project.
This eco-friendly transportation system is a part of the Punjab government’s commitment to reduce the carbon footprint in the city. By introducing electric buses, the government aims to not only provide efficient, modern transport for Rawalpindi residents but also curb the growing levels of air pollution caused by traditional vehicles.
According to sources, the electric buses will cover key routes, including those connecting Taxila, Wah Cantt, and Octori 26, with another route linking Daultala to Rawalpindi. The move is a direct response to the region’s increasing environmental challenges and the need for sustainable alternatives.
The plan was initially announced earlier this year by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, who indicated that the e-bus service would be operational by next year. The service is expected to provide world-class public transport, facilitating smooth and pollution-free travel for passengers.
In August 2024, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved a further expansion of the project, with plans to bring 200 electric buses to Rawalpindi. This decision follows a significant agreement between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Chinese government, which aims to tackle pollution and promote green energy solutions in Pakistan’s public transport sector.
The project also involves the development of state-of-the-art bus terminals, including a 100-bus capacity terminal at the old GTS depot in Chohard Choke and a modern terminal at Adamjee Road, Rawalpindi Cantonment. To ensure efficient operation, 40 electric chargers will be installed at these terminals, supporting the electric bus fleet’s daily functioning.
This initiative is expected to revolutionize Rawalpindi’s public transport system by offering an eco-friendly, reliable, and international-standard service, thus setting a precedent for other cities in Pakistan.
