Peshawar: A fresh case of Mpox has been reported in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the province’s tally for the zoonotic disease to six this year, as confirmed by the Public Health Reference Laboratory of Khyber Medical University (KMU).
The latest patient, a 35-year-old resident of Kot Kashmir Union Council in Lakki Marwat district, tested positive during routine screening at Bacha Khan International Airport upon returning from Dubai on the night of November 28.
The patient, employed as a driver in Dubai for the past five years, exhibited symptoms consistent with Mpox and was immediately transferred to Khyber Teaching Hospital for testing and care.
Health officials have assured that the patient is in stable condition and has been counseled on social distancing and other preventive measures to curb the disease’s spread. Notably, all five previously reported Mpox cases in the province this year have successfully recovered, according to the KP Health Department.
To address potential risks, the Director of Public Health KP, Dr. Irshad Ahmad Roghani, has directed the District Health Officer (DHO) of Lakki Marwat to activate the District Outbreak Coordination Committee. The committee will implement containment measures in alignment with guidelines provided by the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Rapid Response Teams have been mobilized to monitor and mitigate any further spread of the disease.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of vigilance, particularly for returning travelers, and emphasized coordinated efforts to safeguard public health in the province.
With prompt containment actions underway, health officials aim to ensure the situation remains under control while raising awareness about Mpox and its prevention.
