Islamabad: Senator Irfan Siddiqui, the parliamentary leader of PML-N in the Senate and chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, has raised serious concerns about the status of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as a political party.

In a statement shared on his social media platform X, Siddiqui questioned whether PTI, due to its alleged involvement in terrorism, lawlessness, and anti-Pakistan activities, should still be recognized as a legitimate political entity.

Siddiqui called for immediate and decisive action against PTI, warning that any further delay in addressing the issue could be detrimental to the country. He emphasized that the party’s actions, particularly after the violent events of May 9, 2023, have gone too far, making it imperative for the government to make a clear decision about PTI’s future.

He further argued that PTI’s actions, including fostering insecurity, sedition, corruption, and violence, have crossed a threshold where the group’s status as a political party should be reconsidered.

He posed the question, “Which political party in Pakistan’s 77-year history has used provincial power to wage war against the federal government, open fire, deploy tear gas, kill officials, and injure hundreds?”

Siddiqui stated that PTI effectively ceased to be a political party after the May 9 incident, but was still granted an extended reprieve, which he believes allowed the party to further destabilize the country.

He described the events of May 9, 2023, as an attack on the state, with the political party’s supporters bringing bloodshed to Islamabad.

“The state, fulfilling its constitutional duty, had to deal with funerals and collect bodies, while the rioters, under the guise of political persecution, demanded their ‘political rights,’” Siddiqui noted, condemning PTI’s actions.

The call for decisive action against PTI highlights the ongoing political tensions in Pakistan and the growing concerns over the role of political parties in inciting violence and instability.
