Pakistan Has 30 Million Diabetics: NMU VC

Multan: On World Diabetes Day, a walk and seminar were organized at Nishtar Medical University (NMU) in Multan on Thursday to raise public awareness about diabetes and preventative measures.

During the event, NMU Vice Chancellor Dr. Mehnaz Khakwani highlighted the alarming spread of diabetes in Pakistan, where over 30 million people are currently affected, ranking the country third globally in terms of diabetes prevalence. She noted that individuals with obesity face a heightened risk of developing diabetes.

Dr. Khakwani outlined common symptoms of diabetes, which include fatigue, blurred vision, numbness in the feet, slow wound healing, irritability, weakness, excessive thirst, weight loss, and frequent urination.

At the seminar’s conclusion, Dr. Khakwani distributed shields to participants and provided free glucometers to children and elderly individuals affected by diabetes.

Following the seminar, Dr. Khakwani visited the ICU ward at Nishtar Hospital, where ICU Department Head Dr. Shahab Khakwani briefed her on the facilities and treatments available for patients. She expressed satisfaction with the arrangements in the ICU.
