Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called for immediate ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon during a joint summit of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which is expected to reiterate support for a Palestinian state on Monday.
Gathering Arab and Muslim leaders in Riyadh over a year into the Israel-Hamas conflict and broader regional tensions, the summit provides an opportunity to send a united message to US President-elect Donald Trump.
In his opening remarks, Crown Prince Mohammed emphasized the need for the international community to “immediately halt the Israeli actions against our brothers in Palestine and Lebanon,” describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide.”
“Saudi Arabia reaffirms its support for our Palestinian and Lebanese brothers in confronting the severe humanitarian impact of ongoing Israeli aggression,” he stated.
A draft resolution for the summit highlights “strong support” for the Palestinian people’s “national rights,” particularly their right to freedom and the establishment of an independent, sovereign state.
