Islamabad:Breeding and raising rare pigeon varieties goes beyond a mere hobby; it’s an art form that demands dedication, expertise, and deep-seated passion.
Pigeon breeders carefully select pairs, delving into genetics to refine and enhance each variety’s unique traits while ensuring the birds’ health and longevity.
Leading this pursuit in Pakistan is the Pomeranian Club, with President Asghar Khattak and Joint Secretary Muhammad Irfan at the helm.
This community of passionate pigeon enthusiasts is dedicated to elevating the art of pigeon breeding both in Pakistan and internationally.
In an interview with APP, Asghar Khattak explained the club’s mission: “Each year, we organize an exhibition that showcases rare breeds and serves as a platform for education and collaboration among enthusiasts. Members come together to share expertise, exchange breeding techniques, and celebrate the diversity of their feathered friends. The event attracts participants from diverse backgrounds, creating a lively atmosphere of camaraderie and competition. Through this initiative, we honor the rich heritage of pigeon breeding and inspire a new generation to appreciate and engage with this captivating hobby.”

Breeding Pomeranian pigeons in Pakistan’s hot and humid climate presents unique challenges. Originally from Europe, Pomeranian pigeons thrive in cooler, drier climates, making Pakistan’s conditions potentially taxing on their health. Breeders must ensure optimal living environments, including proper ventilation and hygiene, to maintain the birds’ well-being.
Asghar also highlighted the complexities of hybrid breeding, emphasizing the importance of selecting ideal parent pairs to enhance desirable traits while minimizing genetic vulnerabilities. He explained that breeders closely monitor health, nutrition, and breeding cycles to ensure successful outcomes, all while understanding the genetic intricacies of this exquisite breed.
Secretary Muhammad Irfan pointed to the role of media in the growth of pigeon fan clubs, stating, “The pigeon farming community is a vibrant network of enthusiasts, breeders, and advocates. Technology and social media have transformed how pigeon lovers connect, share knowledge, and promote their passion. From online forums to local clubs, these connections strengthen the community and elevate the profile of pigeon farming.”
While pigeon racing is a cherished tradition across Pakistan, the Pomeranian Club focuses on promoting the beauty and elegance of fancy pigeon breeds.
Among the popular racing breeds is the Tippler, celebrated for its endurance and flying capabilities. These majestic birds can soar for hours and often secure prestigious titles, with some fetching impressive prices in the market.
Irfan also shared details about the club’s upcoming annual show in Rawalpindi next month: “The showcase will feature a dazzling array of breeds, each meticulously cared for by their owners from various cities. From graceful Pomeranians to striking black-and-white Magpies and impressive Norwich pigeons, each bird has its own story. The event highlights aesthetics while promoting responsible breeding practices to ensure these rare breeds continue to thrive.”

As visitors stroll through rows of aviaries, the air is filled with the soft cooing of pigeons and the buzz of excitement.
Despite fierce competition, the atmosphere remains friendly and supportive. “It’s about celebrating excellence and encouraging each other,” Irfan remarked. “Winning is wonderful, but the friendships we forge are what truly matter.”
President Asghar Khattak noted that Pomeranian pigeons come in 28 colors, with around 12 found in Pakistan.
Esteemed judges evaluate the best male and female pigeons in each color category, ultimately selecting a champion pair based on attributes such as beauty, height, and eye color.
Last year’s show featured judges from Oman, and the upcoming event will also host international judges.
Pigeon fanciers worldwide participate in prestigious events like the World Championship in Belgium and the Great American Racing Pigeon Show.
These competitions showcase exceptional breeds, with prize money often exceeding $100,000. Such events foster camaraderie, elevate the sport, and highlight the dedication of enthusiasts across the globe.
