Islamabad: On Saturday, President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath of office to Justice Yahya Afridi as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan during a ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, military chiefs, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, governors, chief ministers, ministers, judges from the Supreme Court and high courts, former chief justices, law officers, and representatives from the legal community and media.

Justice Afridi was nominated for the position by a special parliamentary committee, selecting him from the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court, in accordance with the recently adopted 26th Amendment of the Constitution.

Following the nomination, a summary was sent by the prime minister to the president, who approved the appointment of Justice Afridi as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan.
