What Led to Bushra Bibi’s Release After 267 Days in Jail?

Islamabad: Bushra Bibi, wife of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, was released from Adiala Jail on Thursday after being granted bail in 15 cases.

Following her release, she headed to her Banigala residence under tight security.

Bibi had spent nine months behind bars, facing several cases, including those related to the May 9 events, one filed by her ex-husband Khawar Maneka, as well as a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) case.

She was acquitted in nine May 9-related cases and the Maneka case during her detention.

Her release came a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted her bail against surety bonds worth Rs 1 million in the Toshakhana-II case.

This marks her final release after being arrested in January, when she and her husband were sentenced to 14 years in prison for illegally retaining and selling state gifts (Toshakhana case) during Imran Khan’s tenure as prime minister.

The IHC issued the final Robkar for her release on Thursday, after multiple drafts of the document had errors. The court had previously accepted her bail petition in exchange for a Rs1 million surety bond.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the case, while the FIA opposed her bail through its prosecutor, Zulfikar Abbas Naqvi.

Bushra Bibi, along with Imran Khan, had been previously arrested by the NAB on July 13, 2024, in a fresh Toshakhana case.

Their appeals against their convictions in the Iddat case had also been accepted by the Islamabad district and sessions court.
