Kuki Khel Tribe Ends 75-Day Sit-in on Torkham Road

Peshawar: The Kuki Khel tribe of District Khyber has ended its 75-day sit-in on Torkham Road following assurances from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sardar Ali Amin Khan Gandapur regarding the repatriation of displaced tribe members.

The decision came after a Jirga of Kuki Khel elders met with the Chief Minister at his residence on Wednesday to discuss the return of temporarily displaced people (TDPs) to their native areas.

During the meeting, MNA Iqbal Afridi, MPAs Sohail Afridi and Abdul Ghani Afridi, Commissioner Peshawar, Secretary Relief, and other officials were also present. It was agreed that the registration process for returning residents to cleared areas would begin immediately.

For families still displaced, a follow-up meeting with relevant institutions next week will finalize a timeline and action plan for their return.

In light of the Chief Minister’s assurances, the Jirga called off their planned march toward Tirah and ended the 75-day protest. The Kuki Khel elders expressed full confidence in the Chief Minister’s leadership, particularly praising his role in peacefully resolving an October 11 issue.

“His wisdom and leadership prevented bloodshed and brought about a peaceful resolution,” the elders remarked, adding that they trust him to address their ongoing concerns.

Chief Minister Gandapur thanked the Kuki Khel elders for their trust and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safe and prompt repatriation and rehabilitation of displaced families.

He highlighted the sacrifices made by the tribal people in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing that their return is a priority for his government. The Chief Minister also directed authorities to begin procuring necessary supplies for the displaced families’ resettlement.
