Caste System Still a Deep-Rooted Issue in India

Islamabad: The caste system in India continues to be a source of oppression and violence, particularly for lower-caste individuals, according to a report by Kashmir Media Service. Despite decades of independence, the deeply entrenched system remains a significant societal challenge.

The report highlighted that Dalits, often regarded as “untouchables,” continue to face systemic exclusion and are frequently relegated to degrading and labor-intensive jobs.

Women from lower castes are at a disproportionately higher risk of violence and harassment, with caste-related crimes often escaping justice in India’s legal system.

The report criticized India’s democratic framework for failing to dismantle the caste hierarchy and, in some cases, reinforcing its structures. Dalits remain largely excluded from mainstream society, barred from accessing certain public spaces or renting homes in upper-caste neighborhoods.

Caste discrimination in India presents a significant obstacle to achieving equality in the modern world, the report concluded, emphasizing that global organizations often overlook the pervasive issues stemming from India’s caste system.
