Islamabad: The capital city of Pakistan will be placed under heightened security from midnight on October 5 until October 17, as the Pakistan Army takes charge of ensuring the safety of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

According to a notification from the Ministry of Interior issued on Friday, the army’s deployment has been approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif under Article 245 of the Constitution.

The army, alongside paramilitary forces, will maintain a significant presence throughout Islamabad during the high-profile event, ensuring the protection of international delegates.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a statement earlier on Friday, indicated that both the Pakistan Army and paramilitary forces would be deployed from October 5 to bolster security arrangements.

He emphasized the need for foolproof security, given the sensitive nature of the summit and the high-level participation from regional leaders.

Naqvi also urged political parties, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to delay any planned protests in and around the Capital during the period, stressing the importance of prioritizing national interests over political agendas.

“After several years, we are hosting heads of state in Pakistan, and it is vital that we act responsibly,” he stated.

The government has announced that local holidays will be observed in Islamabad during the days of the SCO summit, with an official notification regarding the holiday expected soon.

The SCO Summit is a significant diplomatic event for Pakistan, as it brings together leaders from member states to discuss regional security, economic cooperation, and other matters of mutual interest.

Naqvi Takes Aerial View of Twin Cities

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi conducted an aerial inspection of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Friday to review the security arrangements and assess the overall situation on the ground.

During the inspection, Minister Naqvi expressed satisfaction with the security measures in place. He issued strict instructions to authorities to deal firmly with any disruptive elements, emphasizing that no one would be allowed to compromise the peace and security of the capital.

“The Islamabad administration and police are fully prepared to handle any situation,” Minister Naqvi stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

He further stressed that every possible step would be taken to protect the lives and property of citizens, ensuring the continuation of peace and stability in the region.
