The Mood-Boosting Benefits of Smiling

Multan: As the world observes World Smile Day on the first Friday of October, experts emphasize the mental and physical benefits of smiling, highlighting its role in boosting mood and reducing stress, particularly during challenging times.
In a climate of inflation, unemployment, and rising living costs, a simple smile can significantly alleviate tension. Ayesha Saleem, a psychologist and motivational speaker, explained the connection between smiling and mental health: “Smiling has a direct effect on our brain’s reward system. When people smile, chemicals like dopamine and serotonin are released, improving mood and reducing anxiety.”
Saleem noted that smiling often prompts others to smile back, reinforcing social connections.
Social worker Riaz Lodhi echoed these sentiments, stating, “A smile is a universal language. It connects people.” He believes that even in times of financial hardship, a smile can uplift spirits, saying, “When money is tight, a smile brings hope.”
Lodhi emphasized that while smiles do not solve problems, they help lighten the load and encourage a more positive outlook on life. He added that small acts of kindness, such as smiling, can foster community solidarity and remind individuals they are not alone in their struggles.
Historian Abdur Rasool recalled that World Smile Day was initiated in 1999 by Harvey Ball, the American commercial artist who created the iconic smiley face. Ball’s intention was to promote joy through simple acts of kindness, and since then, the day has evolved into a global movement celebrating the power of a smile.
As communities confront mounting economic challenges, the deterioration of mental health necessitates a renewed focus on the importance of small gestures like smiling. Even a forced smile can release endorphins, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. Research indicates that smiling can lower blood pressure and strengthen the immune system, underscoring the need to promote this simple yet powerful act within society.
