Dengue Outbreak: Highest Single-Day Surge with 118 New Cases

Rawalpindi: Dengue fever continues to surge in the Rawalpindi region, claiming another life and bringing the total number of fatalities to six. In the past 24 hours, 118 new dengue cases were reported, marking the highest single-day count in the district this year.

According to the District Health Authority, a 65-year-old woman, Naseem Begum, from Chak Jalal Din in Potohar Town, succumbed to the disease. Potohar Town remains the most affected area in the district. However, the health authority later clarified that the official death toll in Rawalpindi stands at five, as one of the fatalities was from outside the district.

In the last 48 hours, 221 new cases have been reported across various parts of the city, with 118 from Potohar Town alone. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, public messages, and extensive surveillance efforts, the dengue epidemic continues to affect the region.

Currently, 202 dengue patients are receiving treatment in allied hospitals, where the bed occupancy has reached its limit of 300. The authorities are now expanding capacity to accommodate up to 600 beds.

In 2024, the total number of deaths from viral diseases in Rawalpindi has reached eight, with two fatalities attributed to the Congo virus. Since January, 1,476 dengue cases have been reported in the district.
