Global Truce Initiative Launched for COP-29

Islamabad: Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and a member of the COP-29 Advisory Committee, has called on the global community to embrace the “COP-29 Truce” as a symbol of unity and solidarity in the face of escalating environmental degradation and associated conflicts.
Dr. Suleri, the sole South Asian expert on the COP-29 Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiments of Azerbaijan’s COP-29 Truce Initiative. He urged for a coordinated and unified global approach to tackle the pressing challenge of climate change.
In his appeal, Dr. Suleri emphasized that the upcoming COP-29 conference in Baku presents a historic opportunity for nations to advance a global climate action agenda. He stressed that global warming and climate change are severely impacting Earth, the only home for humanity, necessitating unwavering global resolve in this battle.
“The core message of COP-29 is that humanity can rise above political differences to unite in saving our planet,” Dr Suleri said. “In times of rising conflicts, this ideal is more critical than ever. It is an unparalleled opportunity to bridge divides and pursue lasting peace.”
He highlighted that conflicts exacerbate greenhouse gas emissions and environmental damage, polluting soil, water, and air. The destruction of ecosystems and increased pollution from conflicts worsen climate change and undermine efforts to protect the planet.
Dr. Suleri called for a collective focus and cooperation during the climate talks. “We urge everyone to observe the COP Truce during the month of COP-29. Let this truce symbolize human solidarity,” he said. “By prioritizing peace and climate action, we can ensure a livable planet for future generations.”
The COP Truce Initiative, inspired by the Olympic Truce established in 1992, seeks to halt military operations a week before and during the COP-29 conference.
This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental damage while reinforcing the non-political and unifying nature of the global fight against climate change.
