PMD Forecasts Prolonged Rain Spell In Southern, Central Areas
News Desk
Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the ongoing spell of torrential rains will continue across southern and central parts of the country throughout this week.
According to PMD, a deep depression currently located north of Gujarat, India, is expected to move into adjacent areas of Pakistan, particularly Eastern Sindh, within the next 24 hours. This system is fuelling strong monsoon currents, especially in southern Pakistan.
Additionally, a westerly wave is anticipated to affect the upper regions of the country from August 29 onwards.
Regional Weather Forecast
Punjab: Rain-wind and thundershowers, with a few heavy falls, are expected in regions including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore, and several other districts from August 27 to 31.
Sindh: Widespread rain-wind and thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are predicted in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sukkur, Larkana, and other districts from August 27 to 31.
Balochistan: Widespread rain-wind and thundershowers, with scattered heavy falls, are expected in areas such as Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Naseerabad, Sibbi, and others from August 27 to 31.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP): Rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are anticipated in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Abbottabad, Peshawar, and surrounding regions from August 27 to 31.
Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB): Rain-wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in various districts from August 27 to 31, with occasional gaps.
There is a high risk of pluvial flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh, Balochistan, and South and Central Punjab. The heavy rains may also trigger flash flooding in local nullahs, streams, and hill torrents, particularly in Dera Ghazi Khan, Kalat, Khuzdar, and other susceptible regions.
The Met Department has warned of a possible Glacier Lake Outburst Flood in vulnerable areas of upper KP and GB. Urban flooding is likely in low-lying areas of major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi. Coastal flooding may occur along the Sindh-Makran coast during this wet period.
Meanwhile, heavy rains could trigger landslides in hilly regions such as Murree, Galliyat, Swat, Chitral, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and parts of Balochistan.
Farmers are advised to plan their activities according to the weather forecast, while travellers and tourists are urged to remain cautious and adjust their plans to avoid dangerous situations. Fishermen in Sindh and Balochistan are warned to avoid venturing into the open sea from August 27 to 31.
All relevant authorities are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks.
