Bangladesh’s Caretaker Govt Expands Amidst Political Turmoil
News Desk
Dhaka: In a significant development in Bangladesh’s political landscape, a second retired military general was sworn into the interim government on Friday, part of four new additions to the caretaker administration.
The government, now led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was established after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, 71, and three other officials joined the ‘council of advisers’, the de facto cabinet now leading Bangladesh under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Hasina, 76, fled to neighbouring India by helicopter last week as protests erupted across Dhaka, culminating in the end of her 15-year autocratic rule. The violent protests, which led to her ouster on August 5, resulted in over 450 deaths, most of which were attributed to police actions.
Chowdhury, a three-star general and former second-in-command of the army, retired in 2010, a year after Hasina began her tenure as Prime Minister.
