Islamabad: Speaker National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, emphasized that sustainable and inclusive development cannot be achieved without women empowerment and gender equality. Addressing the inaugural session of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) on “Gender Empowerment and Green Economy,” Sadiq highlighted the critical legislation passed by the Parliament of Pakistan to combat gender violence and support women empowerment.
The event, attended by parliamentarians from 15 Asian countries, diplomatic community members, high-level political figures, government officials, international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), international donor organizations, and academia, showcased regional leadership and partnership in advancing gender equality goals.
Sadiq commended PM’s aide Romina Khurshid Alam for her efforts in organizing the meeting with a timely agenda aligned with national sustainable development goals.
Sadiq noted that the Parliament of Pakistan has been proactive in implementing legislation related to gender equality and reproductive health.
It has established various parliamentary forums such as the women caucus and youth parliamentarians committee to ensure inclusive engagement in policy-making. Additionally, Pakistan’s Parliament was the first public building to secure a net metering license to promote a green economy and renewable energy.
The conversion of the Parliament building and the Speaker’s residence to solar energy highlights the country’s commitment to sustainability.
Climate Gender Disparities
Sadiq addressed the impact of climate change, emphasizing that women are disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters. He pointed out that the 2022 floods caused $30 billion in infrastructure losses and numerous casualties. The lack of equal access to resources for women, despite their crucial role in global food production, remains a challenge. The Parliament is considering a dedicated committee to oversee women’s rights and development status across the country.
The Speaker emphasized that the green economy is essential for economic justice and societal resilience. Women play a significant role in environmental stewardship and green initiatives at the household level. He pledged to use the Parliament’s forum to advance youth and gender empowerment.
Prime Minister’s Coordinator
In her welcome address, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam, highlighted the importance of addressing societal inequalities, particularly gender imbalance, in achieving green development. She introduced Pakistan’s new green vision, including initiatives like Living Indus Initiative and Recharge Pakistan, which involve women in managing wetlands and climate-smart agriculture.
Secretary General of AFPPD, Dr Jetn Siranthranont, and Member of Parliament, Thailand, emphasized that gender equality is crucial for sustainable development and green society.

He noted that traditional stereotypes contribute to gender inequalities and that countries with greater gender equality perform better in development goals.
Minister of State for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, Toshiko Abe, stressed that gender equality and diversity are beneficial for the economy and various sectors. She highlighted the need for increased women’s participation in decision-making forums and access to education.
Youth and Women’s Empowerment
Deputy Representative UNFPA Pakistan, Latika Maskey Pradhan, emphasized the need for investing in youth, women’s education, skill development, and economic empowerment. She reiterated that enhancing women’s autonomy and role in decision-making is essential for leaving no one behind.
In closing, Dr Tabinda Sarosh, interim CEO Pathfinder, noted the growing vulnerability of women due to climate change. She highlighted the impact of the 2022 floods on pregnant women and expressed a commitment to enhancing resilience through active youth engagement, especially on the International Day of Youth and Independence Day.
