Islamabad: Waseem Khatri of Pakistan delivered a stellar performance to secure 3rd place at the World Cup Scrabble Championship held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
According to Pakistan Scrabble Association (PSA) Director Tariq Pervez, Waseem, competing in the top division, faced several world champions but impressed with his strategic play and extensive word knowledge. Despite a challenging start to the four-day tournament, where he lost several games in the first two days, Waseem made a strong comeback, winning 10 of his last 11 games to achieve the 3rd position.
Eta Karo of Nigeria won the championship, securing 23 out of his 31 games. The 2015 World Champion Wellington Jighere finished 2nd with a 20-10 record, Pervez added. Waseem won 19 games in a highly competitive field.
Pervez also noted that Jesse Day of the USA, a two-time World Championship finalist, and former World Champion Joel Wapnick of Canada both finished 3rd.
Waseem’s impressive performance is further highlighted by his recent achievement as a finalist in the North American Championship the previous week. He is the only player to have placed in the top three in both championships held in the USA this month.
