AJK Unrest Ends with Rs 23 Billion Package, Economic Reforms

News Desk

Islamabad: After four days of violent protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the government has yielded substantial concessions regarding electricity and flour.

With the endorsement of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, a Rs 23 billion package has been earmarked for Azad Jammu and Kashmir, responding to the demands put forth by the local government and the All Jammu and Kashmir People’s Action Committee.

The Chief Secretary of Azad Kashmir confirmed that all demands of the Action Committee had been met, resulting in an agreement being reached.

As part of the concessions, internet services were restored, and measures were taken to alleviate economic burdens.

The government issued notifications to reduce flour prices and revise electricity rates. The price of flour per kilogram was fixed at Rs 2,000, with 20 kilograms available for Rs 1,000.

Additionally, relief was provided on electricity bills, with rates set at Rs 3 per unit for consumption up to 100 units, Rs 5 per unit for 100 to 300 units, and Rs 6 per unit for over 300 units. Commercial rates were also adjusted to Rs 10 per unit for consumption up to 300 units and Rs 15 per unit for over 300 units.

The protests, triggered by discontent over electricity bills and inflation, resulted in clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.

Regrettably, one police officer was martyred, and around 100 individuals were injured, including both protesters and police personnel.
