Cannes Film Fest Returns With Comebacks, Strikes, Trump, MeToo
News Desk
Paris: The Cannes Film Festival commences on Tuesday with a dynamic lineup featuring the return of Hollywood icons, concerns over a potential strike, a biopic on Donald Trump, and the lingering shadow of MeToo allegations.
Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited epic “Megalopolis” marks the comeback of “The Godfather” director and stands out as one of the most anticipated entries vying for the prestigious Palme d’Or among the 22 competing films. The jury, led by “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, will reveal its decision on May 25.
Celebrity attendees gracing the red carpet include Richard Gere, Demi Moore, and Kevin Costner, all starring in new productions. Additionally, Meryl Streep, a three-time Oscar winner, and George Lucas, the mastermind behind “Star Wars,” will be honored with prestigious awards.
Adding to the excitement, “Furiosa,” the latest installment in George Miller’s “Mad Max” series starring Anya Taylor-Joy, will have its world premiere on Wednesday.
However, amidst the glitz and glamour, darker narratives unfold at the 77th edition of the festival. France’s film industry confronts a delayed reckoning with the MeToo movement, particularly with allegations against prominent figure Gerard Depardieu and speculations of further accusations against other high-profile individuals.
Actor Judith Godreche, who has accused two directors of assault during her teenage years, will present a short film titled “Moi Aussi” (Me Too), aimed at empowering more women to speak out.
In a troubling development, Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, a contender in the competition, has been imprisoned in his home country on security charges just days before the presentation of his film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”
Moreover, a group of festival staff members have called for a strike due to issues related to pay and working conditions, potentially disrupting the smooth running of the event.
