Meta Calls for Revisiting Ban on Arabic Term ‘Shaheed
News Desk
Islamabad: The supervisory board of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has urged the company to lift its ban on the Arabic word ‘Shaheed,’ which translates to ‘martyr’ in English.
According to reports from foreign news agency Reuters, the independently operated board, funded by Meta, conducted a year-long review and found that the current prohibition on the word ‘martyr,’ under the pretext that it could be linked to terrorism, unnecessarily restricts the freedom of expression of millions of users.
The board recommended that Meta revise its policies so that posts containing the word ‘martyr’ are only removed if they explicitly promote violence or violate other community standards established by Meta.
They argue that Meta’s current stance is unwarranted and that the company should reconsider its ban on the term.
