JSMU Takes Swift Action Against Harassment
News Desk
Islamabad: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) took decisive action to prevent and protect against the harassment of a female student, following directives from the Federal Ombudsperson Secretariat for Protection against Harassment (FOSPAH).
According to the press release issued by FOSPAH, this direction was issued on a complaint received at FOSPAH Head Office on 04.01.2024 from a female student at JSMU alleging harassment at the hands of her lecturer, wherein she threatened suicide in case of inaction.
FOSPAH directed the JSMU Vice-Chancellor, on the same date, to submit a report on the matter within one week. JSMU Inquiry Committee conducted prompt inquiry and a detailed report was submitted apprising FOSPAH that owing to the sensitivity of the matter, the concerned lecturer had been relocated and increased security had been deputed in the premises of JSMU to avoid any untoward incident.
Further, the entire student body was informed that the University has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment.
FOSPAH appreciates the swift response of Vice-Chancellor, and calls upon the Senior Management of the University to put in place proper reporting measures to secure a harassment free environment for the student body.
The Anti-Harassment Act of 2010 requires a standing Inquiry Committee to be constituted in all organisations with the names and contact details of its members to be shared widely and the Code of Conduct to be displayed at prominent places.
