Princess Anne: Queen Fears Balmoral Dilemma
Simon Perry
Ireland: The late Queen peacefully passed away on September 8, 2022, at her cherished Scottish residence, Balmoral, accompanied by her daughter, Princess Anne.
In an upcoming documentary titled Charles III: The Coronation Year, set to air on BBC and iPlayer on December 26, Princess Anne shares the Queen’s concerns about the complications her passing might cause if it happened at Balmoral.
Anne expressed the family’s attempts to persuade the Queen that such practical issues should not dictate her decisions.
“We did try to persuade her that practical concerns shouldn’t guide her decision-making,” Anne explains in the documentary, according to The Daily Telegraph. “So I hope she felt that was the right choice in the end, because we did.”
At the time of the Queen’s passing, sources informed PEOPLE that it was fitting for her to spend her final moments at Balmoral, a place of immense significance to her and her family.
Princess Anne further emphasizes Balmoral’s significance, describing it as a place where the family experienced considerable independence during their youth.
In a poignant moment within the documentary, Anne reflects on the solemn occasion when the crown jeweler removed the Imperial State Crown from her mother’s coffin, symbolizing the transfer of leadership to her elder brother, King Charles.
Upon witnessing this symbolic moment, Anne expresses, “When he takes the crown off the coffin, I oddly felt a sense of relief. It signified closure. The responsibility was passed on.”
Discussing her brother’s sudden ascension to King, Anne admits, “I’m not certain anyone can easily prepare for such a significant change. Then it happens, and you think, ‘Okay, time to move forward.’”
Additionally, preview clips reveal scenes of Charles preparing for his coronation, including a lighthearted moment where he playfully flaps his coronation robes and jokes about flying.
The documentary also features interviews with key figures from the coronation, such as the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, who amusingly fumbles his lines during a rehearsal prayer, as well as Queen Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, who reflects on the surreal experience of witnessing her sister and Charles departing for the coronation ceremony.
