Islamabad: President Joe Biden’s anticipated visit to India for its Republic Day celebrations and the Quad Leaders Summit in January is now uncertain due to recent differences arising after US authorities foiled an alleged plot by India to harm a Sikh leader on American soil.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended invitations to President Biden for India’s Republic Day on January 26 and the Quad Leaders Summit, as reported by various media outlets.

In November, the US disclosed thwarting an attempt targeting pro-Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, raising concerns with New Delhi about possible knowledge within the Indian government regarding the plot.

This turn of events has cast doubt on President Biden’s visit, with implications suggesting a strain on trust due to alleged intelligence activities and plots conducted by India in other nations. The situation has led to re-evaluation of scheduling for the Quad Summit involving the US, India, Japan, and Australia.

Additionally, Canada had previously stated its pursuit of credible allegations linking Indian government agents to the June murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, prompting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to assert any foreign government involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen as an infringement upon sovereignty.
