COVID-19 Linked With Greater Risk of Hypertension: Study

News Desk

Islamabad: A comprehensive study conducted in the United States has shown that Hypertension (high blood pressure) is still high in people suffering from the Coronavirus 6 months after recovery and people who have been hospitalised during the illness are more prone to it.

According to the research published in the medical journal, high blood pressure was 50 per cent higher in people who were admitted to hospitals during Corona even after 6 months compared to other people.

That is, if normal people’s blood pressure was 130/80, they had 150/100 or even more.

American experts examined the blood pressure of 45,000 Corona victims and 14,000 influenza patients in New York. All the subjects were over 40 years of age, and all the volunteers were male and had no history of hypertension.

The experts included the people suffering from Corona from March 1, 2020, to February 20, 2022, a part of the project.

Out of the 45,000 corona victims included in the research, thousands of volunteers had severe symptoms of corona and had to be admitted to the hospital. All patients were evaluated six months after recovery and their blood pressure levels were checked.

Experts found that people who contracted influenza or other similar viruses had a 2.5 per cent higher rate of developing high blood pressure than the general population.

However, the rate of hypertension was found to be very high among those infected with Corona who had severe symptoms and had to be admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Research has shown that people with the Corona virus have a higher rate of high blood pressure than people with influenza or other similar viruses. However, the experts failed to fully prove the reasons for the increase in blood pressure in Corona victims.

According to experts, it is possible that the blood pressure rate may have increased due to some medical complications in Corona sufferers.
