945 Flooding Hotspots Identified on Lahore’s Highways

Lahore: A new study by the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) has uncovered 945 locations on 11 major highways across Lahore where faulty road design and infrastructure flaws are triggering urban flooding, exposing critical gaps in the city’s resilience planning.

The study, conducted under directives of Punjab Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, reviewed 178 kilometers of key urban arteries including Ferozepur Road, Multan Road, GT Road, Circular Road, Ravi Road, and Canal Road.

Using GPS mapping, engineers identified more than 650 road depressions and misaligned manholes, along with potholes and ponding points that turn into flooding hotspots during seasonal rains.

Officials said the technical report—now forwarded for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s approval—doesn’t just diagnose problems but also offers remedial measures to streamline drainage, repair carriageways, and redesign green belts and service lanes.

The report comes amid growing public frustration over Lahore’s recurring urban flooding. Experts stress that fixing these hotspots could not only reduce waterlogging but also improve the city’s liveability and urban aesthetics.

“Lahore’s urban flooding is less about nature and more about neglected planning,” one senior official admitted, pointing to years of uneven roadwork and uncoordinated construction that has left the city vulnerable to even moderate rainfall.
