Islamabad: About 85 million people in Pakistan are currently obese, and the figure could double over the next 30 years if preventive measures are not taken, health experts warned on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference organized by EndoCare Collective Pakistan at the Multan Press Club, the experts described obesity as a major non-communicable epidemic contributing to heart disease, diabetes, liver disorders, and joint problems.

Panelists included Dr Asim Munir Alvi (Punjab), Dr Saleem Khan (Sindh), Dr Sarwar Ali Khan (KP), Dr Kaleemullah (Balochistan), Dr Razi, Dr Abrar, Dr Sardar Ali Khan, Dr Malik Saad Rasheed, and Ms Sidra Faheem.

The speakers urged citizens to avoid fatty and fast foods, engage in regular physical activity, and focus on preventive measures rather than relying solely on medication. Special emphasis was placed on protecting children from obesity by limiting mobile and video game use and promoting sports and outdoor activities.

The experts highlighted that obesity is not only a national issue but a global health challenge, noting a dangerous rise in cases in Pakistan over the past 20 years. They also warned that obesity-related illnesses are placing an added financial burden on families.

The speakers called on the government to implement policy-level initiatives and said the Multan conference aimed to raise awareness and protect the nation from lifestyle-related diseases. A nationwide obesity awareness campaign has already been launched.

Concluding the conference, the panel stressed that obesity is a long-term condition affecting multiple organs and requires a serious, coordinated national approach focused on healthy lifestyles and preventive care.
