8171 SMS Service Continues to Provide Easy Access to BISP

News Desk

Islamabad: The 8171 SMS service remains one of the most widely used and trusted systems in Pakistan for checking CNIC status, payment eligibility, and installment updates under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Ehsaas initiatives, even in 2026.

According to officials, millions of beneficiaries continue to rely on the service due to its simplicity and accessibility. The SMS-based system works on all mobile phones, does not require an internet connection, and delivers official responses directly from government databases, making it particularly useful for low-income households and residents of remote areas.

To check their status, citizens can send their 13-digit CNIC number—without spaces or dashes—via SMS to 8171. Within moments, users receive an automated response indicating their eligibility or payment status.

The response messages typically fall into several categories. A message stating “Eligible – Payment Released” confirms that the beneficiary’s CNIC has been approved and the payment has been issued, which can be collected from designated payment centers or partner bank ATMs where applicable. An “Eligible – Payment Pending” message indicates approval, but that the installment has not yet been released.

In cases where the message reads “CNIC Under Verification,” officials say this usually means the beneficiary’s data is being reviewed, often due to an outdated National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) survey, incomplete family information, or the need for updated NADRA records.

A “Not Eligible” response means the applicant does not currently meet the eligibility criteria, although re-survey or appeal options may be available in certain cases.

The 8171 SMS service currently covers multiple welfare programs, including the BISP Kafalat Programme, Ehsaas Emergency Cash, new installments ranging from Rs. 13,500 to Rs. 14,500 where applicable, special relief packages, and re-verification or dynamic survey results.

Officials said several improvements have been introduced to the system in 2026 to enhance reliability and reduce delays. These include faster SMS response times, improved CNIC verification through closer integration with NADRA databases, better handling of incorrect CNIC entries, linkage with updated NSER data, and automatic alerts for newly released payments.

Authorities have also advised beneficiaries on how to address common issues. If an SMS fails to send, users are encouraged to ensure they have sufficient mobile balance and are using a SIM registered in their own name.

Those receiving a “No Record Found” message may need to update their survey information or CNIC details and are advised to visit the nearest BISP tehsil office. In cases where payment is shown as released but not received, officials say the payment cycle may still be in progress or biometric verification may be required.

Government representatives reiterated that the 8171 SMS service remains the simplest and most reliable method for checking welfare eligibility and payment status. Citizens have been urged to use only official channels and stay informed through government announcements to avoid misinformation or fraud.
