Multan:Nearly 80 percent of heart complications among young people can be prevented by adopting a balanced lifestyle and making consistent daily habit changes, said Dr. Kashif Hashmi, Professor of Cardiology.
Dr. Hashmi highlighted that unhealthy lifestyles have become the leading cause of heart attacks among youth, with poor diet choices and lack of physical activity at the core of the problem. He noted that today’s generation is heavily absorbed in mobile phones and digital devices, which not only reduce physical activity but also increase stress levels.
“Modern lifestyles have distanced young people from fruits and vegetables, essential for maintaining a healthy heart,” he said, adding that excessive consumption of oily and fried foods from restaurants and fast-food outlets has severely impacted cardiovascular health. Dr. Hashmi advised youth to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and balanced meals, warning that both over-eating and under-eating can invite diseases.
He stressed the importance of regular health checkups, including monitoring blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, to detect early warning signs. “Ignoring these basic indicators can silently damage the heart,” he warned.
Obesity, particularly abdominal fat accumulation, was another major risk factor. “Controlling waistline expansion is crucial to avoiding future heart problems,” he said.

Dr. Hashmi emphasized that following practical guidelines, including a balanced diet and preventive care, can reduce the risk of heart diseases by up to 80 percent. He also recommended incorporating daily physical activity, even brisk walking or light workouts for 30 minutes, to improve circulation, manage stress, and maintain a healthy weight. “Exercise should become a habit, not a seasonal effort,” he remarked.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Hashmi urged young people to take responsibility for their health early. “Heart diseases are no longer only an old-age problem; they are striking earlier due to poor lifestyle choices. A disciplined lifestyle safeguards not only the heart but overall well-being,” he said.
By following these simple yet effective measures, youth can lead healthier lives and help reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
