Tokyo: A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck western Japan on Tuesday, the country’s meteorological office said, adding that no tsunami warning had been issued.

The tremor was recorded at 10:18 am (0118 GMT) in Shimane prefecture at a shallow depth, with no immediate reports of major damage.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a slightly lower magnitude of 5.8.

The earthquake registered upper five on Japan’s Shindo intensity scale in the western city of Yasugi, a level at which heavy furniture may fall and drivers can experience difficulty steering.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the region was later hit by several aftershocks measuring 4.5, 5.1, 3.8 and 5.4 in magnitude. No tsunami alerts were issued following these tremors.

Broadcaster NHK reported that no abnormalities were detected at the Shimane nuclear power plant as of 10:45 am, citing utility company Chugoku Electric.

Meanwhile, parts of the Shinkansen bullet train network were temporarily suspended due to a power blackout, operator JR West said, adding that it was unclear whether the disruption was linked to the earthquake.

The Japanese military said it was conducting an aerial assessment to determine any potential damage.
