5 Celebrities Who Criticized Pakistanis for Ignoring Muharram’s Sanctity

News Desk

Islamabad: Muharram Al-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds profound spiritual and emotional significance for Muslims around the world. It is a sacred time associated with mourning, reflection, and the remembrance of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his family.

The heart-wrenching tragedy of Karbala took place in this very month, where Imam Hussain (RA), alongside his loyal companions and family members, embraced martyrdom in the face of tyranny. This month calls for deep respect, solemnity, and spiritual introspection.

However, in Pakistan, the true essence of Muharram appears to be fading. Increasingly, the month is being treated as an opportunity for leisure and celebration. Families plan vacations, weddings, and social gatherings, disregarding the sacredness of these days. This shift in attitude has been strongly condemned by several celebrities, particularly from the Shia community, who have spoken out about this growing insensitivity.

Mohsin Abbas Haider

Actor and singer Mohsin Abbas Haider criticized those who treat Muharram merely as a holiday. He said,

“For some people, Muharram is just a break for fun — they travel, celebrate birthdays and weddings, watch films, and listen to music. Even someone as flawed and sinful as I am knows these days deserve respect. After all, this is the household of our beloved Prophet (SAWW).”

Shaista Lodhi

TV personality and doctor Shaista Lodhi also expressed her dismay over the rising trend of parties and entertainment during Muharram. In a heartfelt post, she wrote:

“It pains me to share what’s been on my mind. Muharram and Ashura were different when we were young. We were taught to respect the values, to avoid certain activities. We learned about sacrifice, patience, and divine love through the stories of our Prophet (SAWW) and His family. That connection seems lost today. Back then, no films were released during these days, no music echoed through homes. Family functions had their time — never in Muharram. I wonder if it’s just me, or do others feel the same? Some pains should never be forgotten.”

Imran Abbas

Actor Imran Abbas voiced his disappointment over film releases on the 1st of Muharram. On his Facebook account, he wrote:

“I’ve never seen films released on the first of Muharram before. This is not about sectarianism — sacred months hold meaning for all Muslims. I remember when PTV would broadcast music-free transmissions during Muharram. Now, dance and music shows are aired even on the 9th of Muharram. People treat it like a holiday season, planning trips to hill stations. It won’t be long before people start celebrating the Islamic New Year with parties. I urge everyone to honor the sanctity of Muharram, Rabi-ul-Awal, and Ramadan, irrespective of sect or background.”

Khaled Anam

Veteran artist Khaled Anam raised concerns within the Shia community, criticizing the commercialization of Majalis through mixed gatherings and theatrical setups. He emphasized that such spiritual congregations should be conducted with solemnity and care, ensuring that they do not offend the emotions of those who hold deep love for the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW). He also criticized certain Noha and Marsiya reciters for incorporating musical tones into religious recitations, turning them into celebratory pieces instead of expressions of grief and remembrance.

Noor Bukhari

Actress and influencer Noor Bukhari also condemned the rising party culture during Muharram. She reshared a video highlighting how people plan vacations and Nikkahs during the first ten days of this sacred month. In the past as well, she has criticized fellow celebrities for traveling during Muharram and disregarding its sanctity.
