5.7-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tonga

Beijing/Hong Kong: Two separate earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.7 struck the Tonga Islands and Isangel with a 5.8-magnitude tremor during the last 24 hours.

The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences reported a 5.7-magnitude quake hitting the Tonga Islands at 2344 GMT on Saturday. The epicenter, located at a depth of 10km, was initially identified at 20.39 degrees south latitude and 173.38 degrees west longitude.

Meanwhile, 116 km SSW of Isangel, Vanuatu, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at 1:59:40 GMT on Sunday, as reported by the US Geological Survey. The quake’s epicenter, at a depth of 10km, was initially placed at 20.53 degrees south latitude and 168.91 degrees east longitude.
