Mumbai, India: At least 25 people, including four tourists, were killed and several others injured when a massive fire ripped through a popular nightclub in Goa around midnight on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
The blaze broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane, a well-known nightclub in Arpora village in North Goa district, approximately 16 km from the state capital Panaji.
Police said the victims included 14 staff members, while the identities of seven others are yet to be confirmed. Six injured people are undergoing treatment.
Authorities said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though preliminary investigations point to a possible liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder explosion near the club’s kitchen area. Witnesses said the flames spread within seconds, trapping many inside.
“Police, fire brigade teams, and ambulances were rushed to the site immediately after the distress call,” Goa Police Chief Alok Kumar said, adding that rescue operations continued through the night.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy. The Prime Minister’s Office announced ex-gratia payments of INR 200,000 for the families of those killed and INR 50,000 for the injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the incident as “very painful” and ordered a magisterial inquiry. “Those found responsible will face the most stringent action under the law. Any negligence will be dealt with firmly,” he said. Local lawmaker Michael Lobo told reporters that most victims died from suffocation while attempting to flee toward the basement.
Goa—one of India’s most popular tourist destinations—draws millions of domestic and foreign visitors each year, attracted by its beaches, nightlife, and coastal charm.
Fire incidents in India remain common due to widespread violations of safety standards, including improper storage of fuel and combustible materials.
Authorities are now focused on identifying the victims and informing their families as investigations continue.
