Islamabad: At least 15 people were killed and eight others injured when a truck carrying nomadic families plunged into a deep ravine near Malakand on the Swat Expressway late Wednesday night.
According to rescue officials, the accident occurred when the truck’s brakes failed while descending a steep section of the highway, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall into the ravine. The victims were nomads from Bahrain and nearby areas of Swat who were migrating to Faisalabad for the winter season.
Rescue sources confirmed that women and children were among the deceased, as the tragedy wiped out entire families traveling together. Fifteen people died instantly, while eight others sustained serious injuries.

Rescue 1122 and Levies teams reached the site soon after the incident and launched a difficult recovery operation to retrieve bodies and survivors from the rugged terrain. The injured and deceased were shifted to Category-A Hospital Batkhela (DHQ Hospital), where medical teams are providing emergency treatment. Officials said several injured individuals remain in critical condition.
Describing the scene as “heart-wrenching,” authorities said the wreckage was scattered across the ravine, making rescue efforts challenging. Hospital staff have reportedly requested additional medical support to handle the influx of critical patients.
Preliminary investigations suggest the truck was carrying nomadic families undertaking their seasonal migration from Swat to southern Punjab, a common practice among nomadic communities seeking milder weather and better livelihood opportunities during the winter months.
Local authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident.
