14% Children Die From Pneumonia: Experts

Islamabad: With one child dying of the pneumonia disease every 30 seconds worldwide, around 14 percent of children die due to pneumonia in Pakistan, said health experts.

Addressing the launch of research ‘Breathing for Tomorrow: Exhibiting Advances in Respiratory Health with a Focus on Under Five Pneumonia’ on Wednesday, experts revealed that pneumonia continues to be one of the leading killers of children under five globally.

District Health Officer (DHO) Islamabad Dr. Zaeem Ziasaid that doctors should follow medical ethics in hospitals to properly serve patients.

Neoventive Solutions Director of ResearchDr Hana Mahmood informed that Neoventive Solutions is helping to address childhood pneumoniaas part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s (NIHR) Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health.

Dr Hana told that Neoventive Solutions, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Health Services and with the support of the International Research Force, conducted research in Pakistan to generate evidence at three levels of the healthcare system.

At the community level, our researchshowed that there was limited knowledge on under-five pneumonia with delayed care-seeking.This was followed by an investigation on the use of mobile health technology to aid the community in the prevention of pneumonia through Lady Health Workers (LHW).

Other health experts further said that pneumonia remains neglected across the countryalthough it is a long-standing issue.

It is imperative that a high-quality evidence base, providing sustainable, scalable solutions, be generated in order to attract policy-level attention and, in turn, decrease the burden of disease.
